Ride Like G.I.R.L.S.

Updated: 6 days ago

I ride motorcycles, and let me tell you boys have a lot to learn from the girls.

Women are simply safer in the saddle. Despite accounting for nearly 20% of motorcycle ownership today, women make up only 8% of motorcycle fatalities—a striking contrast to men’s 92%. Even adjusted for ownership disparity, studies show that women are safer- 4:1.

They typically gear up smartly and buy the right gear despite the “pink tax.” Women tend to steer clear of pack-induced peer pressure, and are less prone to reckless behaviors like speeding or riding impaired. Women tend to view riding as a personal and mindful experience rather than a thrill-seeking stunt. They also take safety seriously: 60% of female riders complete certified training compared to just 42% of men.

At Tilikum, we support women riders. They file fewer claims, and often enjoy lower premiums by and large. We also advocate for professionally fitted full-face helmets—because as the saying goes, $100 helmets are for $100 heads.

So let's ride like GIRLS!

G — Gear

Dress for the slide, not the ride.

  • Full protective gear: helmet, gloves, jacket, pants, boots

  • Bright colors and reflective gear for visibility

  • No exceptions, every ride

I — Inspection

Know your bike before you roll.

  • Check tires, brakes, lights, and fluids

  • Test throttle, clutch, and horn

  • Do a quick walk-around before each ride

R — Ride Smart

Brains over bravado.

  • Follow the rules of the road

  • Stay in your lane — literally and figuratively

  • Predict, don’t react

L — Learn Continuously

Training makes the difference.

  • Take certified safety courses

  • Practice emergency braking and cornering

  • Stay sharp with refreshers every season

S — Solo or Strategic

Ride alone or ride with care.

  • Solo riding lowers peer pressure risks

  • If riding in a group, follow formation and spacing rules

  • Never try to “keep up” with unsafe riders
